Our History

On Saint Patrick’s Day in 1893, the United Hibernians of Westchester County marched through the villages of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. Nearly 3,000 uniformed participants assembled for what became the villages’ first Saint Patrick’s parade.

The idea for today’s parade began over lunch in 1997, when Hugh Casey and Mickey McGee discussed bringing a Saint Patrick’s parade back to the community. With help from John Dunleavy, then coordinator of the New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, they gathered the people and resources needed to begin.

The founding committee included Hugh Casey, Mickey McGee, Mary Grace DeClemente, Paul Clarke, Barry Clarke, Mike Hogan, Brendan Buckley, and Jackie Sullivan. The first modern Sleepy Hollow Saint Patrick’s Parade was held on the second Sunday of March 1997, with Kitty Geissler serving as its first Grand Marshal.

Grand Marshals and Aides are selected in recognition of their volunteer service to the community and the parade. Over the years, the celebration has grown to welcome neighboring villages, community groups, and organizations throughout the Hudson Valley.

The 31st annual parade will be held Sunday, March 14th, 2027. Mass begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Transfiguration in Tarrytown. The parade steps off at 1:30 p.m. on Tarrytown’s Main Street, continues north on Route 9 to Beekman Avenue in Sleepy Hollow, and concludes at Kendall Avenue.

Helen N. Keating has been selected as the 2027 Grand Marshal. This year’s parade is dedicated to the Walker Farrington Heart Fund.
